2008 Annual Math Awards Lecture

(Andrew James Granville is a British mathematician, working in the field of number theory. He has been a faculty member at the Université de Montréal since 2002. Before moving to Montreal he was a mathematics professor at University of Georgia (UGA) from 1991 until 2002. He was a section speaker in the 1994 International Congress of Mathematicians together with Dr. Carl Pomerance from UGA. Granville received his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) (1983) and his Certificate of Advanced Studies (Distinction) (1984) from Trinity College, Cambridge University. He received his Ph.D. from Queen's University in 1987 and was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada in 2006. Granville's work is mainly in number theory, in particular analytic number theory. Along with Carl Pomerance and W. R. (Red) Alford he proved the infiniteness of Carmichael numbers in 1994. It was published in Annals Math. 140 (1994), 703–722 with the title "There are infinitely many Carmichael numbers". This proof was based on a conjecture given by Paul Erdős. In 2008, he won the Chauvenet Prize from the Mathematical Association of America for his paper "It is easy to determine whether a given integer is prime," Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, 42, 2005, pp. 3-38.)

NUAMPS announces the launching of Science in Society (http://scienceinsociety.northwestern.edu), a new online "e-magazine" dedicated to offering the public an engaging view of the way science impacts our lives as well as providing an entry point to the exciting research efforts at Northwestern University and across the world.

The Science and Politics of Stem Cells, Aging, and Cancer

(Researcher Sean Morrison (Univ. Michigan) studies the role of adult stem cells in human development, aging, and cancer. As evidence mounts that many cancers may in part result from normal adult stem cells going awry, Morrison and his group hope to develop treatments that would target cancerous adult stem cells while leaving normal regenerative stem cells unharmed. In his lecture, Morrison discusses the basic biology of stem cells, their role in cancer and aging, and how state and federal politics are affecting the progress of stem cell research.)

Using Simple Cells to Unlock Complex Secrets of Biology | Susan Lindquist Ph.D.

Ravel - Concerto for Piano (Left Hand) and Orchestra

(Maurice Ravel composed Concerto for Piano (Left Hand) and Orchestra for Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in a World War I injury. In 1934, the piece was performed in Montreal, Boston, and New York, achieving critical praise. Strauss - Don Quixote

(On January 27, 2007 NUAMPS spent an evening with the Northwestern University Symphonic Orchestra. The program included Nocturnes by Debussy, Five Pieces by Schoenberg, and Don Quixote by Strauss. In Don Quixote, which Richard Strauss dubbed "Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character," Strauss exhibits his command over the orchestra, using a variety of musical colors to express images and dramatic personae. This performance features cello soloist Anna Burden, who has performed extensively throughout the United States.)

Schoenberg - Five pieces for Orchestra

(On January 27, 2007 NUAMPS spent an evening with the Northwestern University Symphonic Orchestra. The program included Nocturnes by Debussy, Five Pieces by Schoenberg, and Don Quixote by Strauss. In Five Pieces, Arnold Schoenberg toys with abandoning traditional aspects of tonality. Instead of creating rapid harmonic movement, he allows the color of each chord to transform almost unnoticeably, moving the listener to new emotional plateaus with each development.)

(On January 27, 2007 NUAMPS spent an evening with the Northwestern University Symphonic Orchestra. The program included Nocturnes by Debussy, Five Pieces by Schoenberg, and Don Quixote by Strauss. Nocturnes, composed by Claude Debussy, was inspired by three paintings of James McNeill Whistler of the same titles. Just as Whistler was a proponent of color as the focal point of his paintings, so too do Debussy's works make use of colorful timbres.)

Digitally Preserving China’s Relics

Some of the most advanced imaging technology available is being used to photograph and help preserve a unique and historically significant Buddhist temple near Xi’an, China. In a major collaborative effort, media experts and software development specialists from Northwestern University Information Technology (NUIT) are working with the Shaanxi Provincial Wenwujiu (cultural relics bureau) to completely document the interior of the Shuilu’an Temple in high–resolution digital imagery.

On May 31, 2006, Joe Levy (Kellogg, '47) was presented the Kellogg Alumni Master Entrepreneur Award for his support of entrepreneurial practice at Kellogg. Levy, chairman of Levy Venture Management, car dealership entrepreneur, and a founding director of Computer Discount Warehouse, has clearly illustrated his commitment to the entrepreneurial spirit by facilitating a long-running weekly meeting of entrepreneurs as well as through his contributions to Kellogg. Levy has played a major role in Kellogg’s development with gifts such as the endowment for the Joseph and Carole Levy Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship chair. NUAMPS helped celebrate the event with a twelve-minute documentary tribute to Mr. Levy’s accomplishments as emotionally narrated by those who know him well. Kellogg faculty, staff, and alumni joined with fellow entrepreneurs in expressing their admiration in Levy’s strong principals and compassion.
