2008 Annual Math Awards Lecture (Media)

Andrew James Granville is a British mathematician, working in the field of number theory.

He has been a faculty member at the Université de Montréal since 2002. Before moving to Montreal he was a mathematics professor at University of Georgia (UGA) from 1991 until 2002. He was a section speaker in the 1994 International Congress of Mathematicians together with Dr. Carl Pomerance from UGA.

Granville received his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) (1983) and his Certificate of Advanced Studies (Distinction) (1984) from Trinity College, Cambridge University. He received his Ph.D. from Queen's University in 1987 and was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada in 2006.

Granville's work is mainly in number theory, in particular analytic number theory. Along with Carl Pomerance and W. R. (Red) Alford he proved the infiniteness of Carmichael numbers in 1994. It was published in Annals Math. 140 (1994), 703–722 with the title "There are infinitely many Carmichael numbers". This proof was based on a conjecture given by Paul Erdős.
In 2008, he won the Chauvenet Prize from the Mathematical Association of America for his paper "It is easy to determine whether a given integer is prime," Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, 42, 2005, pp. 3-38.

The Science and Politics of Stem Cells, Aging, and Cancer (Media)

Researcher Sean Morrison (Univ. Michigan) studies the role of adult stem cells in human development, aging, and cancer. As evidence mounts that many cancers may in part result from normal adult stem cells going awry, Morrison and his group hope to develop treatments that would target cancerous adult stem cells while leaving normal regenerative stem cells unharmed. In his lecture, Morrison discusses the basic biology of stem cells, their role in cancer and aging, and how state and federal politics are affecting the progress of stem cell research.

A new 2East Digital Projects Gallery exhibit showcases the Melville J. Herskovits Maps of Africa digitization project in which NUAMPS played a key role. The map digitization project resulted in digital copies of 113 antique maps of Africa dating from the mid 16th Century to the early 20th Century. The 2East Gallery joint undertaking produced 38 high quality prints produced from the digital assets, returning the digital images to their analog (paper) form—with extraordinarily little loss of detail, texture, and original color.

Screen Capture Videos (Feature)

Within NUIT Academic Technologies, we develop complex intellectually challenging software. Upon completion of one of these projects, we sometimes discover another challenge — explaining how to use the software. Often that can be accomplished with a brief paragraph, but there are situations which call for something a little more exegetic and illuminating. NUAMPS recently worked with Architect for Scholarly Technologies, Bill Parod, to produce videos that explore two AT projects.

The screen capture videos showcase AT work relating to two Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funded projects, Fedora and Monk/WordHoard. Though Fedora was used extensively in the development of the Encyclopedia of Chicago History, most users are not aware of the digital object repository system's critical role in getting the vast library of information online. WordHoard is an extremely feature-rich text mining application and is one of the building blocks of the new Monk project. Monk will combine the text mining capabilities of WordHoard with visualization features of the Nora Project.

Need a little more information? Take a look at the videos.

Her laboratory investigates how protein conformational changes provide epigenetic mechanisms of inheritance, shape evolutionary process, and cause devastating neurodegenerative diseases. Her lab's recent work on the molecular events underlying Parkinson's disease has provided important insights into the role that misfolded proteins play in disrupting normal cellular function.

The program included Nocturnes by Debussy, Five Pieces by Schoenberg, and Don Quixote by Strauss. In Don Quixote, which Richard Strauss dubbed "Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character," Strauss exhibits his command over the orchestra, using a variety of musical colors to express images and dramatic personae.
On January 27, 2007 NUAMPS spent an evening with the Northwestern University Symphonic Orchestra. The program included Nocturnes by Debussy, Five Pieces by Schoenberg, and Don Quixote by Strauss. In Five Pieces, Arnold Schoenberg toys with abandoning traditional aspects of tonality.
The title of Igor Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms refers less to any specific classical form than to the original meaning of the word symphony - sounding together. Stravinsky wrote that his goal was "to create an organic whole without conforming to various models adopted by custom, but still retaining the periodic order by which the symphony is distinguished from the suite... a choral and instrumental ensemble in which the two elements should be on equal footing."

On May 31, 2006, Joe Levy (Kellogg, '47) was presented the Kellogg Alumni Master Entrepreneur Award for his support of entrepreneurial practice at Kellogg. Levy, chairman of Levy Venture Management, car dealership entrepreneur, and a founding director of Computer Discount Warehouse, has clearly illustrated his commitment to the entrepreneurial spirit by facilitating a long-running weekly meeting of entrepreneurs as well as through his contributions to Kellogg. Levy has played a major role in Kellogg’s development with gifts such as the endowment for the Joseph and Carole Levy Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship chair. NUAMPS helped celebrate the event with a twelve-minute documentary tribute to Mr. Levy’s accomplishments as emotionally narrated by those who know him well. Kellogg faculty, staff, and alumni joined with fellow entrepreneurs in expressing their admiration in Levy’s strong principals and compassion.

Anatomy of Gender (Feature)

FEATURED PROJECT: Male and female anatomical differences seem to be self-evident, neutral truths of biology. And yet, throughout Western history, male and female bodies have been continuously subjected to diverse social, religious, and cultural characterizations that are anything but neutral. The exhibit Anatomy of Gender, curated by Lyle Massey, assistant professor of art history, Northwestern University, and organized by the Block Museum, explores the complex attitudes toward visualizing sexual differences. While the physical exhibit brings together diverse media such as prints, printed books, and sculpture, the placement of such items in a secure display setting limits the amount of contact a visitor may have with each object. Professor Massey, therefore, employed Northwestern University Digital Media Services and NUAMPS to create a digital component for the exhibit. The Anatomy of Gender website offers navigable images from seven books of prints, information on the books, their authors and the images, and essays that explore the significance of the images in shaping or sustaining cultural characterization of male and female biology.

FEATURED PROJECT: Media doesn’t stand still. With Apple’s new Video iPod, neither does the audience. NUAMPS has always grown with technology, and now we provide our original video content in iPod Video format. Handheld media is challenging the methods by which we disseminate information and culture. Because NUAMPS works to identify new educational technologies, the iPod’s audio, image, and video capabilities as well as its cultural popularity offer an effective platform from which to begin the exploration of mobile media. Pieces with wide audience interest, such as The Magic Flute, the Ed Paschke Memorial Service, and the MediaWorks Promo are already available through our ‘Projects’ page as iPod compatible files. As our library grows, production of media for the iPod will become standard.

InfoCommons Screensaver (Feature)

FEATURED PROJECT: With its wide range of digitization services, NUAMPS is always exploring improved methods of digitizing and archiving unique library collections such as maps from the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies collection, a selection of 31 maps of Paris depicting the city as far back as the 12th century, and the five-volume Robinson’s map of Chicago. With new archival methods, opportunities arise for new methods of distribution as well. Therefore, as part of its involvement with the NU Library InfoCommons, NUAMPS assisted in the development of an InfoCommons screensaver which displays full views and close-ups of a number of NUAMPS-produced archival images. The screensaver rotates through the collections of images and displays them on unused InfoCommons PC’s and plasma screens, allowing significant NU resources to exist in a publicly visible way.

FEATURED PROJECT: On May 31, 2006, Joe Levy (Kellogg, '47) was presented the Kellogg Alumni Master Entrepreneur Award for his support of entrepreneurial practice at Kellogg. NUAMPS helped to celebrate the event with a twelve-minute documentary tribute to Mr. Levy’s accomplishments as emotionally narrated by those who know him well. Kellogg faculty, staff, and alumni joined with fellow entrepreneurs in expressing their admiration in Levy’s strong principals and compassion.

Africana Maps (Default Label)

This collection of images represents an extremely high-resolution digital archive of maps of Africa held by Northwestern University. These maps are as old as five hundred years, and it is easy to see how they have been damaged over time. The maps were scanned in small sections to achieve maximum resolution. NUAMPS then digitally "stitched" these image pieces back together into full maps as large as 3 gigabytes in file size. The result is a resource for professors and researchers to view the maps at larger than actual size, without damaging them. The zoom-able image viewer was developed by Academic Technologies.

Better Digitization with Betterlight (Feature)

FEATURED PROJECT: For the last year NUAMPS has utilized its Hi-Resolution Digitization Studio to bring professional digitization services to the Northwestern community. The latest addition to the studio is the Betterlight Super 8K-HS digital camera back, a 4 x 5 scanning back capable of an 8000 x 10600 pixel grab at native CCD resolution and a 12,000 x 15,990 pixel grab with Enhanced Resolution™. In the past, due to the constraints of acquisition equipment, NUAMPS employees were often required to hand assemble multiple captures of photographed items in order to achieve the extremely high resolution imagery needed for academic and scholarly investigation. With the Betterlight, however, the majority of objects can be photographed in single captures meaning that the final product is truer to its physical antecedent, and oversized or delicate volumes and objects require less handling.
